Attention all parents, safety officers, teachers and school administrators: Very soon Google going to roll out a new social networking service called Google+.
- Keith

Here is a reference article:

Google targets Facebook with new social service

(Reuters) 6/28/11
Google Inc, frustrated by a string of failed attempts to crack social networking, is taking another stab at fending off Facebook and other hot social sites with a new service called Google+.

Google designed the service, unveiled on Tuesday, to tie together all of its online properties, laying the foundation for a full-fledged social network. It is the company's biggest foray into social networking since co-founder Larry Page took over as chief executive in April.
(snip)

Google+, now available for testing, is structured in remarkably similar fashion to Facebook, with profile pictures and newsfeeds forming a central core. However, a user's friends or contacts are grouped into very specific circles of their choosing, versus the common pool of friends typical on Facebook. reut.rs/krHVLu

This recent court rulling implies that students have the right to produce satire about their schools, teachers and administrators under certain circumstances. Since the satire was posted on MySpace, it is considered outside of the school environment.

Schools should take a good look at this case and make sure their School District has clear policies in place that students and parents understand.
-Keith

High school students win free speech cases
06/15/2011
Daily Caller

This past Monday the federal Third Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled, En banc, that public schools cannot punish students for online speech made off-campus.

In two separate cases two students created online social profiles of their respective principals at the website Myspace.com. The profiles contained vulgar language and lewd suggestions.

In response, both schools gave their students a 10-day suspension.
(snip)
At the heart of both cases were the questions of whether the two profiles’ satirical tones count as defamation and if schools can punish a student for online comments made off-campus.

Today Facebook announced several updates that allow you to download your Facebook information and organize your friend lists into groups such as school, work. communities, organizations or, teams. Read the article below for details.

Facebook's New Groups Try to Change Everything
by Jared Newman, PCWorld
Oct 6, 2010 2:40 pm

Friend lists have been a hallmark of Facebook since the beginning, but now Facebook thinks it's found a better way in Groups.

Yes, Facebook already has Groups, but that feature is going away as you know it. In its place will be a more open structure, where anybody can add other users to a group, no approval required. The goal, Facebook hopes, will be to create social clusters that evolve naturally, like they do in real life. So you might have one group that consists largely of hometown friends, another for nuclear family and another for your intramural soccer team.
